Carolyn Collins works as a janitor in Tucker High School in Tucker, Georgia, United States. At first glance, she is a normal custodian who cleans up after the students, mops the floors, tidies up the classrooms, and restocks the bathrooms every single day. Three years ago, however, something happened that changed the way she contributed to the school community. Two homeless students went up to her and asked for help because they were starving and had nowhere to go. That became the turning point for Carolyn. She then decided to transform a small janitor’s closet into “The Care Closet”. Her closet aims to help homeless and starving students by giving them the things they need to survive.

Using mostly her own money, Carolyn stocked the closet with supplies that she can distribute to the homeless students who need them. Supplies include shoes, clothes, school materials, canned goods, small snacks, and even toiletries. Posted inside the closet are small handwritten posters with inspirational quotes.

According to Carolyn, she lost her son three years ago during a home invasion. In an interview, she shared how this event helped inspire “The Care Closet”:

“I’m just trying to stop our young boys from stealing and killing. Because they’re homeless and they’re crying out for help and love, and I’m trying to give them all they need in this closet so [they] don’t have to go out and try and steal and take from no one.”

Carolyn also shared how she depends on the school teachers to let her know when there are students in need of assistance:

“I tell the teachers a lot, if you see a child always with their head down, with the same clothes on repeatedly, day after day, you know, let me know.”

The “Care Closet” custodian helps 20-30 students a year, but knows that the need is much greater.

However, in her own little way, Carolyn helps students feel that someone cares.
